Symbol of beauty and femininity, the Kabyle silver jewel is an ancestral art practiced with different variations in all the countries of the Maghreb and the Sahel.
Silver jewelry is a sign of the "secular anchoring of goldsmiths in Kabyle culture" with pottery, rugs and woodcarving.   The artisans of Ath Yenni, a locality in the wilaya of Tizi Ouzou, are known for their know-how and the quality of their aesthetic work in the manufacture of silver jewelry, a profession passed down from father to son for generations.   Geometric symbols and decorative designs are formed using very thin plates and threads made from virgin silver shot.  The partitions are enamelled with bright colors: blue symbolizes the sky, yellow is associated with the sun and green to represent nature.  Other jewels are set with coral from the Mediterranean basin, a symbol of sacred fire.   Refined and rich in color, each piece of jewelry carries social and cultural significance.  Thus, the bracelets, the fibula, the tiara and the earrings give indications on the personal status of the woman (bride, fiancee, celibate etc.).
