The Florida swamp is full of mysteries. Some are the stuff of fantasies, like the wil-o-wisps... Others are the stuff of nightmares. From 20 foot long alligators to spiders the size of your head, the swamp is no place to get lost. Especially when you know there are things out there that no science has proven. Things like the Skunk Ape.
This creature, legendary to the state of Florida, has been seen from Apalachicola to the Keys, and descriptions of it vary. All but one thing, the smell. If a Skunk Ape is around, you'll smell it before you will ever see its shaggy, algae covered body. They bear a signature, wet-dog, rolled in death, stink that fills the air within feet of the creature.
The Seminoles call it Esti Capcaki, and describe it as a 7 foot tall, carnivorous beast. That is a far cry from the lovable Bardin Booger of Palatka fame. Physically, it has been seen as a red haired, Orangutan type of creature... While others describe it as a dark, Gorilla-like thing.
Whatever it actually looks like, many people have seen it. Sightings were documented in 1818 and still occur to this very day. It seems that if your in the mood for a little scare, camping a weekend at the Big Cypress National Preserve is your best bet.
