Description
ABOUT:Special and beautifully ornate and heavy silver box detailed on all sides with acid etched swirls and an applied 14k gold coat of arms / crest on the center of the lid depicting a horse holding a Fleur de Lis (?), a knight's helmet and a lion on a shield holding the same symbol as the horse. Fantastic quality. Nice size, so it may have been a card case, cigarette or snuff box but could a number of things - my husband and I use our silver boxes to carry vitamins : )
A friend told me the helmet facing the side typically denotes nobility, although I don't know any more about the piece. I acquired the case in an antique shop in Arizona, but it is an Astro Hungarian piece with the silver hallmark used around 1867. It also has a maker's mark of KT but I could not identify it. Very sturdy hand feel.
It weighs 108 grams and measures about 3 1/4" by 2 1/4" by a little over 3/4 an inch deep.
Inside the case is a vibrant vermeil / gold wash with I believe a name. Not sure if I am reading it right but looks like ""Filippine" a' Carmen de Lamberts.
CONDITION DETAILS:
In estate condition considering age. Such nice quality with its thick and sturdy sides that it has no deep dings or dents. Surface wear and scratches. There are a few ripples visible on the inside, not really noticeable on the outside so it may have been done in the making when the details were done. Surface wear and scratches on the inside more noticeable due to the highly mirrored finish inside.
Hinge is still very tight. It opens smoothly with tension and closes with a loud snap.
But as with all my estate items - Please see photos closely as this is not a mint condition item.
Thanks for stopping by!
