With the major changes brought about by the Meiji restoration (beginning of 1868) and a Haitorei Edict (March 1876), the Japanese were no longer allowed to wear swords. During this time many old craftsmen families had to find another form of livelihood. The opening of a Western market for Japanese craft resulted in

Condition: Very clean exterior with light pocket wear and no visible dings or damage. Interior shows several slight depressions not visible through the high relief of the exterior. Clasp and hinge are firm with no signs of sloppiness.
