    Description

    Strand of mixed red beads from Africa.  These beads vary in shape and range in size from 8 - 22 mm long.  They appear to be different qualities of glass, varying in the smoothness and consistency of the glass.  Some are an opaque darker cranberry red (these are the more roughly shaped ones) and some a shinier cherry red.  The necklace is 22 " long and weighs 5.1 oz.  One of the beads is broken (bottom left in photo #1).  The hole sizes vary from 1 - 3 mm.  They appear to be wound as most show some striations around the beads. The age of these bead is unknown, but I am guessing more than 50 years old based on when my mother was collecting African Trade beads.  They do not have differently colored centers, and they have mostly been flattened on the ends.
